Strawhouse Market

Client : Dirk Ellis

Project details
  • High Insulation Straw bale wall system.
  • Energy efficient mechanical/electrical systems utilizing a ground source heat pump tucked onto the small site.
  • Passive solar design.
  • Rain/snow capture system for on-site irrigation.
  • Select permeable parking areas to reduce site runoff.

The original Strawhouse Market as designed by CWG a few years ago was for a natural food store, deli, and coffee shop. This building was recently sold to a dentist and we were hired to do an adaptive reuse while retaining the original shell and energy savings systems to keep utility bills low.

The building is constructed of post and beam framework with straw bale constructed walls. The building incorporates many energy saving mechanical and electrical systems, including passive solar heating and cooling. The building site utilizes on site rain/snow capture for landscape irrigation and permeable pavers at exterior patios and parking areas.
