This memorial day, my Fiance, dog and I went camping. We had been looking forward to getting out and relaxing for the weekend. On Friday, we packed up the car and headed out to Vigilante Campground which is about seven miles past the York bar. When we got here we were not surprised to find that it was full. This left us with the “Now what?” phase of the weekend. We decided to drive around Hauser Lake and then Canyon Ferry Lake to see what campgrounds we could find. After stopping and looking at four campgrounds we settled at Chinaman’s Campground on Canyon Ferry Lake. We picked this one because it had more trees for shade.
We were both commenting on how many options we had that we were not aware of. There are many more that we did not even stop at. We were also somewhat impressed that we found a good spot for not having reservations on memorial day weekend.
The lakes around Helena have so much to offer. On Saturday, we went back to Vigilante Campground where we hiked the Hanging Valley trail. There is another trail that starts from Vigilante Campground called Trout Creek also but we wanted something more challenging. While it was challenging, it was also scary for me because I was constantly avoiding the possibility of getting attacked by a bear. While I was definitely overreacting due to it being a common hike on a very busy weekend, I always have to be cautious.
On Sunday, we decided to rent a two-person kayak for the day from Kim’s Marina. It was so fun to be able to go out on the water. We even got our dog to come on with us and explore.
Overall, it was a very fun and relaxing weekend. We were so lucky to be able to go camp for the weekend on a lake just miles and minutes from town. I can’t wait to camp more this summer and explore more areas around Helena.
